Probable Cause
DTSB: The DTSB determines the Probable Cause of this accident to be In-flight medical incapacitation, in that the pilot lost consciousness while in flight in the vicinity of the airport. The female passenger was not a pilot but had some previous experience from previous flights. The passenger landed the airplane on runway 05 at KGVL and the pilot was transported to a local hospital. The pilot had previously held a third class medical but had elected to choose the Basic Med option due to his increasing health problems. The pilot later died in the hospital and the report was then changed from a serious injury to a fatal accident.
NTSB: NONE
Recommendation
DTSB: The DTSB recommends that all pilots of all aircraft self monitor their own age and condition, so as not to put themselves and others at risk due to possible impending medical problems, even though they have been legally cleared by FAA to act as PIC.
